How to Include Pets in Your Family Portrait Session

You know who might just be the most unpredictable star of your next family photo session? The one who chases squirrels, steals socks, and insists on being wherever their humans are. Yep, I’m talking about your furry, four-legged family members.

Including pets in your session

…isn’t just adorable - it’s a beautiful way to celebrate the bond your family has in its truest form.

I’ve had more than a few sessions where dogs unintentionally stole the show. Like the senior session where the family casually mentioned (at the end of our planning call!) that they’d be bringing their “puppy” - a one-year-old Great Dane. He arrived in his own car like the VIP he clearly was. While he had zero interest in smiling for the camera, he melted beautifully into candid shots with his best girl, especially when she flopped onto the grass to cuddle him like they would at home. Those photos? Pure gold, and now they’re going with her to college.

Yes. Bring the dog.

Why It Feels Tricky (But Doesn’t Have to Be)

Let’s be real - managing kids during a family session is already a full-body sport. Add a dog who thinks every leaf is a toy and you’ve got a parade of lovable distractions. But that doesn’t mean a pet-inclusive session has to be stressful.

Here’s my secret: photographing dogs feels a lot like working with toddlers.

  • They respond best to snacks

  • They will absolutely ignore us for a squirrel

  • When they’re done, they are done

I don’t expect perfect poses and eye contact from anyone (two-legged or four). What I do aim for is real connection. And when we treat the session like play instead of a performance, everyone - pets included - gets to enjoy the moment.

How to Include Your Pet in Family Photos (Without Losing Your Sanity)

Bring a Designated Pet Person

Whether it’s a grandma, friend, or trusty neighbor, having a dedicated helper gives your dog a break when we're focusing on human-only shots.

  • Their job? Keep the pet entertained or relaxed off-camera when needed.

  • Bonus: You won’t have to juggle leashes, kids, and smiles all at once.

Leash Laws Are Non-Negotiable (But Not a Problem)

We’ll follow local laws, which usually means your pup will need to stay on leash. No worries - I’ve got editing tricks, natural hiding angles, and positioning ideas to keep your photos looking polished (and your dog safe).

  • Choose a neutral-colored leash if possible

  • Shorter leashes are easier to manage in-frame

Bring the Goods (Treats, Toys, and Tissues)

Pack a small bag just for your pup. Think:

  • High-value treats (in small bites - works for kids too!)

  • A favorite toy to grab their attention

  • Water, poop bags, and a towel in case someone gets, well... too enthusiastic

Let me know ahead if your dog is reactive or shy so we can pick an ideal location.

Expect Real, Not Perfect

If we get a frame with everyone looking at the camera - hallelujah. But honestly? Some of my favorite moments come from complete chaos: the dog looking up adoringly, a kid giggling straight into the fur, a parent mid-shrug as Fluffy bolts after a butterfly.

The feel-good secret: Don’t stress the composition. Focus on each other. Let me do the wrangling, noise-making, and treat-waving.

Keep It Short & Sweet

For many pets, especially dogs with low stamina or high curiosity, less is more.

  • Include your pet early in the session while everyone’s fresh

  • After 20-30 minutes, let them be done (or take a nap in the car with their pet-sitter)

  • That way, we still have time for relaxed family portraits after their big cameo

Why Including Your Pet Matters

Our pets are part of the family. They’re in your bedtime routines, your holiday traditions, your kids’ imaginary adventures. Capturing this bond is part of your story.

Years from now, when you flip through your photo album, I want you to find that image where everyone’s a little disheveled and full of joy - dog hair, giggles, and all. Because that is real life. And it’s beautiful.

If you’ve been thinking, “I’d love that, but my dog would never sit still,” please hear me: Stillness is overrated. Connection is the goal. I’ve got the patience (and treats) to prove it.
